Biography
It was a miracle that Ethan Baxter was born a "normal" child, thanks to his mother Alice's alcoholism that she managed to put off temporarily from the moment she found out she was pregnant, until the day he was born. After the pregnancy, while her husband Roy had an 80-hour work week as a truck driver, Alice wound up leaving Ethan in shopping carts and swings, neglecting him for days at a time, and almost letting him drown while she drank. When Ethan was 5, Alice had been on the way home from picking up her husband after a rough work week, she was twice the legal limit and pulled onto the freeway going the wrong way. Roy was killed, and Ethan was in the ICU for weeks. Alice had a broken collarbone. Another woman and her teenage daughter were killed in the accident as well, resulting in a criminal trial that sentenced Alice to 25 years in prison for vehicular manslaughter.
After he was released from the hospital, Ethan was sent to live with Alice's estranged sister and brother-in-law, Marcia and Greg Thompson, who already had three kids and stresses of their own in Charlotte, NC. Though they weren't nearly as bad at parenting as Alice had been, they still managed to heap blame for hardships onto Ethan. His cousin Jake was his confidant and his reluctant partner in crime. The kids made fun of Ethan for how short he was when he was a kid, and Ethan had a bad habit of picking fights with those kids. Jake tried to warn him when teachers were looking, and vouched for him when he needed to be gotten out of a sticky situation. Ethan in turn protected Jake and did things for him every once in a while. This continued until high school, when they began to hang out with different crowds. Ethan began smoking, drinking and experimenting with drugs at 14, and he barely made it through high school and graduation. A lot of it was a blur, and every year he made an annual trip to see his mother in Georgia, until he turned 18. He decided not to go back after Alice gave him a talk about the illegal activities he should stop getting involved in.
There was no way Ethan was going to go into college, and he wanted to be around his Aunt and Uncle about as much as they wanted him around, so he decided to follow a few friends that were going to live in Boston on little more than a whim. He got a string of odd jobs to survive once he lived on his own, and lost touch with his extended family after a short amount of time. He was something of a womanizer as well, and managed to never have an actual girlfriend after high school, when he gave more of a crap about what people thought. Once he decided he wasn't going to have this luxurious life some people dreamed of, since he was a fairly simple guy and wasn't going to win the lottery or go to school, he just got what he could when he could do it. A drunken night of beer pong led to a threesome in which he kissed and touched another guy, but he pretended it didn't happen not long after. Pretending didn't take away the fact that a light switch had been flipped on, but he only ventured further into his curiosity via porn and other activities alone.
For a year he was living paycheck to paycheck and eating Top Ramen a large portion of the time, until he got a lead on a customer service job that made $20/hr at South NSTAR. He managed to get hired and did well in the company, and while he was good at what he did at work, he hated the environment he worked in. Most people there hated their job because they were getting yelled at constantly. Ethan wasn't even phased until a supervisor would give him crap while he was there, or a coworker made negative remarks. He was making enough money to where he got to move into an apartment in Revere, MA, with a friend of his that was working at the same company, a town they picked out because it was relaxing, and their job was tense enough. Two and a half years into the job, a position opened up in the employee could work form home. Ethan thought he was the least likely to get the job, considering he talked back to supervisors here and there (within reason to stand up for himself) and sometimes instigated and picked fights with coworkers when they were rude to him, but he got the position and was set up quickly. He still had to go in to work once a month for company meeting, but other than that, he felt like a free man. The money was great and since there was no commute, he was able to save more money and got himself into another nicer place. Once his friend moved out of Revere and to New York to follow a new job lead, Ethan got his own apartment in Pitcarin Place.
